Wild swimming has become a real go-to for many who want to look after their mental health. Speak to anyone in the open water and they’ll all have a specific reason for doing it.

That could be to improve physical health, it could be to cope with anxiety, to see friends, or even as part of a healthier routine in recovery from alcohol rehab. Everyone has a story and everyone is seeing the benefits being in the open water, surrounded by nature, brings.

More and more people across the UK are seeking out the best places for wild swimming across the country and there really is an abundance to choose from. So, if you’re a wild swimmer and want to get on the road and enjoy a peaceful dip in one of the country’s real hotspots, then here are five you should consider…

    River Wye, Herefordshire

The River Wye is often described as one of the most picturesque rivers in the UK, winding its way through the stunning countryside of Herefordshire and the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its clear, slow-moving waters are ideal for swimmers of all levels, offering numerous access points and quiet spots along its course.

Symonds Yat is a particularly popular location, where the river meanders through steep wooded hills, creating a tranquil and scenic backdrop. The area is also popular for canoeing and picnicking, making it a perfect day out for families or groups looking to enjoy the great outdoors.

    Fairy Pools, Isle of Skye

Nestled at the foot of the Black Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye, the Fairy Pools are a magical destination for wild swimmers. These crystal-clear pools, fed by tumbling waterfalls, offer an almost otherworldly experience, with vibrant blue and green hues reflecting the surrounding Scottish landscape.

The water here is famously cold, even in summer, so a wetsuit is recommended for extended swims. However, the breathtaking beauty of the pools and the surrounding hiking trails make this spot well worth the journey for any wild swimming enthusiast.

    Hampstead Heath Ponds, London

For those living in or visiting the capital, Hampstead Heath offers one of the most accessible and iconic wild swimming experiences in the UK. The Heath boasts three swimming ponds: one for men, one for women, and a mixed pond, all set within the leafy tranquillity of this large urban park.

The ponds are open year-round, attracting swimmers brave enough to take on the winter chill as well as those enjoying a leisurely summer dip. Lifeguards are on duty, and facilities such as changing rooms and showers are available, making this a great introduction to wild swimming for beginners.

    Llyn Padarn, Snowdonia, Wales

Set within the spectacular Snowdonia National Park, Llyn Padarn is a glacially-formed lake offering breathtaking scenery and excellent swimming conditions. The lake’s clear, calm waters are surrounded by majestic mountains, providing a stunning backdrop for a swim.

There are several easy access points around the lake, particularly near the town of Llanberis, where you’ll also find facilities such as cafes, parking, and water sports centres. Llyn Padarn’s sheltered location means the water can feel relatively warm in the summer months, making it one of Wales’ most popular wild swimming spots.

    Port Meadow, Oxford

The River Thames flows gently through Port Meadow, providing a peaceful setting for wild swimmers near the historic city of Oxford. The wide, open spaces and easy river access make this an excellent location for a summer swim, particularly for those looking for a safe and calm environment.

Cattle and horses often graze freely in the meadow, adding to the charm of this idyllic riverside setting. After your swim, you can enjoy a stroll along the riverbank or head into Oxford for a well-earned meal and refreshment.
